Why Portable Shelters Make Sense Here

Shade and Shelter That Moves With Your Herd

Central Oregon's high desert is beautiful and unforgiving in equal measure — blistering summer sun, biting winter wind, and pasture that takes years to recover once it's been torn up. A mobile livestock shelter gives your animals a dependable place to get out of the weather without locking you into a single fixed spot on the property.

At Cascade Fencing, we build custom, skid-mounted shelters designed to be towed wherever your animals need them — from a summer grazing rotation to a sheltered winter paddock. This guide walks through how they work, what to look for, and how to size one for your operation.

01 — Portable by Design

Why Portable Beats a Permanent Structure

A permanent barn is a major investment — foundations, permits, and a fixed location you're stuck with for the life of the property. A mobile shelter skips most of that. Because it sits on heavy-duty skids, it can be dragged to a new spot with a tractor or truck as your needs change, which means you can follow your grazing rotation instead of forcing your animals back to one worn-out corner of the pasture. It also spreads manure and hoof traffic across the land rather than concentrating it in a single area, which keeps your ground healthier over time.

Portable shelters pair naturally with rotational grazing, and many of our clients set them up alongside new agricultural fencing so animals and shelter can move through paddocks together.

02 — Weather-Ready

Built for Central Oregon Weather

The high desert throws a lot at livestock: intense summer UV, sudden temperature swings, dry wind, and heavy snow load in winter. A shelter that works here has to do more than provide shade. We frame ours from solid, weather-rated lumber and top them with metal roofing that sheds snow and stands up to the gusts that roll off the Cascades. The open-front design gives animals shade and a windbreak while keeping bedding dry — so your herd has somewhere comfortable to be in July and January alike.

03 — Sized to Fit

Right-Sizing a Shelter for Your Animals

The right shelter size depends on what you're running and how many head. As a general rule, cattle need more square footage per animal than sheep or goats, and horses need room to move without crowding. You also want enough covered space that lower-ranking animals aren't pushed out into the weather. We'll talk through your herd — species, headcount, and how you graze — and build a footprint that fits, whether that's a compact shelter for a few goats or a larger run for cattle.

If you're weighing your options, our mobile livestock shelters page shows recent builds, and we're always happy to walk your property before you decide on anything.

Common Questions

Mobile Livestock Shelter FAQs

Our shelters are built on heavy-duty skids, so they can be dragged to a new location with a tractor or a suitably rated truck. There's no need to dismantle anything — you hook on, tow it to the next paddock, and set it back down.

Because a skid-mounted shelter isn't a permanent, foundation-set structure, it often falls outside the permitting required for a barn — but rules vary by county and property. We recommend confirming with Crook or Deschutes County before you build, and we're happy to point you in the right direction.

We build shelters for cattle, horses, sheep, and goats. The main differences come down to size and layout — we'll match the footprint and the opening to whatever you're running.

It depends on your species and headcount, plus how much room you want so lower-ranking animals aren't crowded out. We'll size it during the site visit — most people are surprised how much a right-sized shelter improves the way their animals use the pasture.

Yes. We frame with weather-rated lumber and use metal roofing that sheds snow and handles wind. These are built specifically for high-desert extremes, not mild-climate kits shipped in from elsewhere.

Timelines depend on size and our current schedule, but we'll give you a realistic delivery window in your estimate and keep you updated along the way. Communication is a big part of how we work.

Cascade Fencing did an excellent job on our new chain link fence. Owner Devin and his helper Caden were very courteous and professional. Pricing was extremely fair and I just want to say that Cascade Fencing is one of the most honest companies I've ever had the pleasure to work with. Thank you Devin!
